Uli's gear

Uli's gear

Unread postby Redman » June 17th, 2006, 2:01 pm

Well, I used to think that my next guitar would be double fat Strat with two Super Distortion pickups, like Dave Murray(?) and Glenn Tipton had, but then I listened to In Trance and other early Uli era Scorpions albums and I was like, WOW! I know Uli used a Strat with 3 single coils, but if anyone knows more about his guitar, or guitars from the era he used to play in the Scorpions', I would be very happy. My next guitar will definetly be Strat with three single coils. Two humbuckers is a good combination as well, but I already have Flying V for heavier music.

His gear is Identical to Jimi Hendrix's... exept maybe for the wahwah.

-Fender American Stratocaster (Single coil)
-crybaby wahwah
-Old Marshall's 100w

-I think uli was using an overdrive pedal or probably a foot switch (clean/overdrived)

Yeah, I heard he has always been using his 1970's Marshall Super Lead and Fender amps for clean sound. Well, I just have to get that Strat now, hah. But of course, I don't have money it for years.
And need that wah wah too.

Well Uli uses a very weird guitar. Weird shape and it has 36 frets or something like that. And yes he uses plexi Marshalls.

Yeah, in the 80's. Not during the Scorpions Era.

His amps in the Scorpions didn't have 2 channels. They were single channel Marshalls. Old plexis, probably from the late 60's and early 70's. The first master volume was out in 1975, but i am very sure that Uli kept using old marshalls. His Marshall amp was a 100w Tremolo Super Lead that was nicknamed the "Beast". His distortion clearly comes from the tubes being overdriven very hard and pushed to the limit.

Redman, in my opinnion there is nothing better than a SSS Strat and a Marshall amp. And don't be fooled by single coils. They can go very heavy.

hah, at least some single coils. I've seen a single coil that has more output than most of the humbuckers, including some ceramic humbuckers.

Yes, those are JCM900's. Steve used them frequently in the early 90's.

You probably know that it's not the amp that makes the player ...

You should check out some video's of uli on http://www.youtube.com
You can find some nice things there (also Sails Of Charon). And listen to his sound on some clips. When he plays on the lower notes he sounds like a cello, and when he plays high I sometimes wouldn't hear a difference between him and a voilin. Pretty amazing.

I've seen all Uli's videos in YouTube. Amazing! Incredible! I listened to Sky Overture and it was incredible song! Then I heard Sails of Charon... wow! And now Uli is my favourite guitarist! Makes me want to play Stratocaster through Marshall super lead

Yeah, it's strange how his guitar sometimes sounds like a violin... does he use effects to do it? Malmsteen does. But then again, Uli's guitar is so weird...

Btw, does someone know if there's such thing as LP of Uli's Transcendental sky guitar album? I mainly buy albums at these days, for many reasons and this album sounds like a good one.

Well I wouldn't say Malmsteen his guitar is violin like. It's totally different. I don't think he uses a particular effect to get this sound. I think it will be some sort of rarely used drive pedal.

He plays with volume swells to kill the attack of the note and to make it violin-like.

Not all the time, his sound is just violin.
