MJ Guitars / Munich Concert Review

MJ Guitars / Munich Concert Review

Unread postby Scorplady » December 28th, 2012, 4:40 am

There is no way for me to write a better review than Nadia - I don't have enough caffeine in me to be that crazy! But know as I write this - the more I think about things in such detail - oh man - crazy times my friends, just crazy times. I enjoy details...so just a warning.

MJ Guitars

So after the Hard Rock Cafe meeting, I spoke with both Nadia and Curry and they assured me that we need to meet at MJ Guitars early. Something like 11 am. Realize, that was no easy thing to do with 3 women (me, Susan and Beth) sharing a room and being absolutely exhausted from so many crazy things. Somehow we managed it (Maybe I went into Boss mode - haha I probably did - just to get us out the door!) and grabbed a taxi and headed to MJ Guitars. Of course I think it was then that Susan realized "Oh sh-t I forgot to bring Cristy's gift for Matthias she sent to me." More on that later. :)

No sign of Curry or Nadia of course! I think they went shopping or something...And MJ Guitars was pretty quiet so Beth went off shopping and Susan and I went to find some kind of food for our tummies. We came very close to going to McDonald's (yuck!) because unlike France - there isn't a croissant shop at every 20 meters! :) But we found a pastry shop, had our coffee and some not so great pastry things and headed back to MJ Guitars. By then things started to really pick up. For me it was like a class reunion - I seemed to recognize almost everyone there. It's hard to believe it - here I was 3,500 miles from home yet I'm in this small guitar shop hugging and talking to people I had already met the night before. This my friends is the power of the fans and the family we are in.

Matthias had not shown up yet and the girls and boys were all grabbing t-shirts to buy, plecs and of course wondering what things we could and could not touch. I loved the atmosphere and just seeing the energy rise as more and more people showed up. I didn't end up buying anything - sorry Matthias - I would of happily walked away with a guitar but I think some alarms would of gone off. I talked to Stefan (really cool guy) and roamed a bit until I found a chair. This must of been the most comfy chair ever, I sat in it and my body basically said "oh you're not moving from here!" It was next to the stage and just in a perfect spot, out of the major fan traffic and so forth. I think I could of taken a nap in that chair. :) One of the most endearing things for me was that of all the people who were at the Hard Rock Cafe with me the night before, almost all of them when they came up to (remember I had the chair) they seemed really concerned when they asked me if I was alright or how I was doing. I guess I did look a little frazzled the night before!

After hanging out for a bit, I believe I finally saw Curry and Nadia (as well as so many others...don't think I forgot about you folks!) and things were getting really busy. Lots more people were showing up and so did Matthias so that caused a stir. Unfortunately, the pastry things we had for brekkie didn't really fill us up enough and we decided to grab some food at the restaurant next door and make plans for the rest of the day. What time to get to the Olympiahalle and what do we do about Cristy's gift sitting in our hotel room? Delphine and her friend from Singapore joined us.

After some really good food we decided that it was best that Susan and I head back to the hotel and get Cristy's gift and then get back to MJ Guitars to give it to him as soon as we could. As always things took longer than expected - the taxi drivers liked taking us the long way - but we were wise on the way back! By the time we got to MJ Guitars things were winding down (the show was over) so Delphine (our ride to the Olympiahalle) texted me and said "Sorry we are going now!" And off they went before we were able to get back. It was a big dilemma for fans, what do you do? Go to MJ Guitars or go wait in the queue to be up front at the concert?

I think the stars were aligned just right because just as we were getting there, Matthias, Pawel and James were still there but you could tell they were about to leave. So I snatched the gift from Susan's hands and did some pushing and shoving and met up with Pawel who was just about to head out the door. We talked a brief moment and I gave him one of the gift bags from the Hard Rock Cafe (I am not sure if he recognized me) and he mentioned the Hard Rock Cafe and how they had sent a message to us (I guess it never made it - I never got a message anyways) that they weren't going to make it. (That's a story for another day.)

Then after some "nice nice" talk to the security guard that was guarding the backroom of MJ's shop, he let me know he was about to come out and I could give the gift then. A few moments later I am face to face with Matthias shoving this gift bag in his hand and making sure he heard me, "This is from Cristy in Colorado" he smiled and acknowledged it as he took it and said a big thank you with his MJ happy smile. Mission accomplished! Karma achieved - Cristy it came very close that we were not going to head back to get it for you! :)

Then I wandered over and saw that James was still there as well taking photos with people and wearing one of the elf hats from the meeting. (Yeah those elf hats were my idea - I found a website with instructions on how to make them and then Beth decided it was what she was going to do and got most of them done with some elf helpers!) Please understand at this point - I was more than just tired, I was exhausted. I was having trouble sleeping from the overnight flight up until that point - pretty much 6 days with 2 or 3 hours of sleep maximum - the expression Running on Empty (great song) comes to mind. When I got to James I couldn't resist sarcasm and basically said to him "So what happened to you last night - you were supposed to be at the Hard Rock Cafe?" Hahah, I must of said it harsher than intended I remember hearing a bunch of people laugh and go "ooooh oohhhh."

James then signals me over to him and immediately apologized and said he didn't go because he was sick for the last 4 days. He looked like how I felt after my trip to France a couple of weeks earlier. You could tell he wasn't feeling good but as a true professional he was still there meeting fans until the last minute. We talked a little while and I mentioned the M&M's to him (the ones in the gift bags) and it was totally adorable but he said he won't eat them. Just like talking to a 3 year old "Nope, not gonna!" Drummers I swear. :) Anyways, I handed him the complete gift bag and told him - he has extra M&Ms now to eat. He seemed unconvinced. But as always time was fading fast and he told me "See you at the show."

Well, at that point I was being honest and I had already discussed it with Susan on the way back to MJ Guitars - there was just no way that I could make the made running dash to the front of the stage. I wouldn't make it. I fall when I'm NOT exhausted, but I knowing how tired I was - I just didn't see how I could make it to the front to see him at the show. Too many things against me - first too many ahead of me in the queue and then that "RUN FORREST RUN" to the stage. So I told him, "Well I don't think I'm going to make it this time - I just don't see how I'll get to the front at this point." He then asked me for something to write on - and the only thing I had were those hearts (the ones you see of photos at the show) so I handed him one and next thing you know I am writing my name on it so that he could put me on his guest list.

Speechless...just speechless (and now that many of you have met me - you know I am seldom without words). I was so very surprised, it was incredible. My brain is screaming at me "No way" and then as I stare at the heart with my name on it - it tells me "Yes way."

Moving on towards embarrassing moment #34508602333 - after thanking him (ever feel like "Thank you" just isn't enough to say sometimes? It's a strange feeling - you either repeat it several times - like I did or you try to compensate somehow). Before leaving Canada I had purchased a pink feather boa - as pink as James' hair. My original plan was that I would throw it up to him on stage at the end of the show just for a laugh - but with my brain not registering to itself "hey you're on his guest list" I decided to give it to him at MJ Guitars. In the moment that he put it around his neck I was probably as pink as that stupid feather boa - and he proclaimed it to be "This is getting silly." I thanked him about 10 more times and then it was time to go, guest list or not there was a queue to line up in. I was secretly hoping that he left the feather thing at MJ Guitars - but nooooo he took it with him (there are photos showing so!). So I apologize to everyone who got their photo taken with James wearing the elf hat AND the pink feather thing - I've never been one for fashion but that's definitely not going to be a new trend. My thanks to James for being a good sport with all the silly things the fans give him. He said he doesn't get rid of the stuff fans give him - but I'm betting that pink thing is long gone. Well okay I'm hoping. :)

I wanted to stay until the guys in the band left, but the theme of my trip was there just wasn't any time - I swear I think this is how rock stars feel - one city after another until they all seem the same. But at least they have their private jets and people to worry about their schedules for them. That sounds great to me. :)

I said goodbye to the remaining stragglers that I recognized from the night before. Everyone looking quite happy I will say. Met up with Susan and then Catarina from Sweden on the way out and we made a mad dash for a taxi to bring us to the Olympiahalle.

The Concert in Munich

Okay I'm going to skip the parts from about 16:30 to 18:30 (that's just a guess - I think the doors opened at that time - I'm sure someone can correct me). There was quite a bit of chaos from finding out there are 2 entrances to some kind of drama at one of them. That isn't a story for me to tell, but I know that there were no hard feelings at the end of the story so all is good. I know that Susan and I took a wrong turn on our way to find the restroom (where apparently you don't actually rest) so we did some extra walking. And I'll never know if James got my name on the guest list, because by some twist of fate I was offered a chance to go inside just before the doors opened along with a few friends. We were missing Delphine though and I kick myself every day for it. I will make it up to her.

The Highs

The gang of us (me, Curry, Adriano, Nadia, Susan) stood at the front of the catwalk or what is called the "T" in amazement to be there. This was a gift that will never be forgotten, standing there with Susan and Adriano on my right and Curry, Gabi and Nadia to the left. There was one missing and that was Delphine. There just wasn't enough time - I swear I would of run outside to the box office to see if my name was on the guest list and given her those passes, but before we knew it the doors were open and people started running inside. Try as we could to save spots for her, in the end it didn't happen. I thought she was just behind the front row, but that's a story for another day. I won't dwell on it but I won't forget it either.

Onward to better thoughts - it was great to see Gabi up front and the energy and excitement of everyone was incredible as we waited impatiently for the shows to begin. First thing to notice was all the film cameras, they were filming for this concert. I believe it was for the Deutsche Welle film that is coming out in April or so. All those cameras were in the way! But thankfully where we were standing it wasn't so bad. I only wish we could of been closer to the stage - damn barrier so far away!

While waiting for the opening act to begin the lead singer of the opening band was hanging out with us. I made sure he was a Scorpions fan then (because I was sick of carrying it!) I gave him an extra gift bag. He seemed really grateful for it and thanked me several times. While I did like the opening group, their songs didn't have much difference in them, it sounded like a German Nickelback with a Rammstein edge. We did get everyone to sing the "FISH STICKS" song with us though. Gosh that was funny. That one song sounded like he was saying "fish sticks" over and over.

By the end of the opening group the adrenaline started to kick in - at this point I wasn't at my 2nd or 3rd wind, I must of been on my 12th wind. If it wasn't for the fact we had so many people pressed up against each other I doubt I would of been standing! But luckily wind #12 came through and I kept on thinking to myself - it's time for the show!

Balloons & Hearts

I might not be remembering this correctly but what I remember is that about 6 minutes before the Scorpions were to be on stage, I suddenly remembered the balloons! You see, there were 3 balloons in each gift bag with instructions (in 3 languages) on when to use them. Well the minimum order was 500 balloons so with all the extra balloons and instructions I brought them to the arena and we started to hand them out to people. I thought for SURE that people wouldn't give a crap about them nor read the instructions. But the more we gave out the more that people seemed to want. Then I figured well they will blow them all up before the show for sure...while some were not many were considering. And even though I was pretty much holding a balloon for most of the show I didn't even remember the instructions myself.

It was absolutely MAGICAL...a good number of people listened/read the instructions and when it was time for the encore it was like a purple balloon shower. That brought me to tears - it worked! it worked! Well okay I'm a bit ahead of myself, but holy crap it was beautiful - maybe because one of my favorite colours is purple. :)

Those pink and red hearts - well what I had left I handed them out. I don't know when, before or after? At some point because we all we holding them and they were on the ground too. What a mess!

The Concert

Damn film cameras is all I will say. The band was a bit different that night in comparison to Oberhausen. They had cameras following them around on stage and on the sides, big and small. I thought that formed some sort of barrier between them and us. Don't get me wrong - I'm not complaining. I'm sure we all act a bit different knowing people are video taping you like that. But it was disconcerting and distracting. At least for the first part of the show after awhile they seemed to of warmed up a bit more thankfully. Besides it was HOT in that Olympiahalle.

The energy was CRAZY amazing. As I said in the above post, James was sick and what a trooper to be able to get through the show. Pawel was a bit more there in comparison to Oberhausen, but he lacked a big presence. I know he has it in him, maybe he caught those germs from James and wasn't feeling good.

Rudolf was a total machine, he seemed to enjoy himself more at that show than any other I have seen this year. Maybe it was the cameras, maybe because it was the last show of the tour, but he seemed to have this aura of energy around him where if you looked at him, you smiled from ear to ear. Of course maybe that's why he always wears sunglasses (besides the obvious reason of all the lights!) if we see his eyes during the show, we could go insane. Hah!

Matthias was the usual Matthias. I don't mean that in a bad way, I mean that in a good way. Very consistent, reliable and enjoys himself while entertaining all of us. He loves what he does and he knows how to do it.

Klaus - dear Gods and Goddesses that voice! I didn't know what he was saying most of the time, but I knew what he was singing. I'm not sure how he managed it but his voice seems to be better at the end of the tour somehow...it doesn't make sense. Usually at the end the voice isn't all that good. Whatever he is doing - he needs to keep doing it, his energy was dead on.

Lots and lots of pyro during this set. That was a surprising twist. It reminded me of some of the US shows but with more pyro! Man that stuff made things HOT and sometimes stinky too.

The setlist - holy guacamole! The tried and true setlist PLUS all the extras - We'll Burn the Sky and No One Like You as well as When The Smoke is Going Down. Sent shivers down my spine several times. It was magical.

The Connections

Hmm, I guess I didn't see what Nadia saw. I saw plenty of kisses blown and points, winks and smiles from Klaus but I don't remember him saying any names in the crowd. If he did - good for him! Heck maybe he said mine (but I doubt that) too! I remember when he kissed the plec and pointed to Gabi to throw it to her then when she got it, he kind of looked at me for a moment and I gave him a thumbs up for approval - I'm not sure the expression he had but it seemed thoughtful? Or maybe he was happy to see someone happy in the audience? I dunno. But it was interesting. :)

I swear Rudolf was laughing at us...I could see through his glasses as he stared over at us moving side to side alongside with him. Except one of us was off because we kept crashing into each other. Of course it didn't matter and it probably made it all the funnier. I hope they got THAT on film. :)

Again Pawel rarely saw the end of the stage, I looked for him a few times and he seemed okay in his normal spot - maybe it was the cameras all in the way or how they wanted to film it. I'm not sure, he seemed to be having a great deal of fun just not in the forefront.

Matthias is as Matthias does - he was his normal flirty self, but that whimsical look from the night before was nowhere to be found. He seemed to make few connections and it was more about the film than the crazy fans screaming for him.

James as I said was a real trooper - I think some people threw him things. I know I tried to get him one of those hearts, but I failed in my attempt. At the end of the show he did take Rudolf's plec and kissed it and tried to throw it to me, but I just missed it. That would of been a nice catch, but the guys in back of me must of snagged it. For someone as sick as he seemed, my hat goes off to him for getting through that show the way he did.

The Energy

The word "magical" keeps coming up and it's true. There was magic in the air that night. Was it the FOSers in the front rows? Was it the cameras? Was it the band giving what they had left to us that night? Was it everything? Probably.

Curry's scarves were amazing - the balloons and hearts - the singing. The emotions, the tears and smiles. When Klaus dedicated Send Me an Angel to the people in Connecticut - my heart skipped a beat. When they played holiday I thought of my Mom and just hoped she was part of the energy. She loved the Scorpions too.

When Klaus told us that it might be the last date on the final sting tour but that isn't the end our spirits were lifted high. Of course we all suspected it, but telling us there was the perfect time.

The band loved us and we loved them. It was magical - it didn't feel like just another concert and trust me this year I've seen my fair share around the world. This was an event to remember.

Yes, there was "that"

Yes, there was a drum solo (the now normal shortened version), but we didn't kick ass that night. I get the feeling that if anyone's ass was kicked - that would be James! I hope he recovered quickly.

Yes, there was a guitar solo - a little bit modified but not significantly. I love it how right after Matthias' solo that it goes into Big City Nights - that just works so damn perfectly!

Yes, Klaus whistles perfectly again. One day I'm going to meet him again I hope and we need to have a talk about this ability to whistle so well.

Yes, Rudolf wore those awesome glitter shoes. Rudolf, you don't want to know how much we girls talk about how much we love those shoes...really you don't!

Yes, the flag that many people signed FOR the band got to them on stage and as far as James' drum kit. I remember seeing Klaus trying to read it too. He had a quizzical look on his face, "Umm I don't remember there being a country with a purple flag what is this?" :) (I never did sign it, they will need to get my autograph some other day I guess hehe)

In Conclusion

Okay I know this is a bit of a different kind of review - even for me. I think Nadia summed it up for me perfectly and in so much detail - I'm not sure what else to say!

Was the concert perfect? No, not at all. Was it magical? Yes, for certain.

Will I ever forget being there and that energy as I stood next to or near some amazing people? Never. It's a rare chance to be at a concert with so many people that know each other so close, it was a family. I loved seeing Curry and Adriano high fiving each other. Of Nadia calling Nada. Seeing Gabi feeling and hearing the energy just like we do.

I'm sure I will have more to say, but for now I'm all typed out. The concert was beyond my expectations. I would of loved to catch something to bring home, but I brought home some amazing memories and it makes for lighter luggage yay! :)

wow-wo-wow! here's another great review!!!! Thank you Joanne :) and ..khm...thanks for mentioning my name in the first lines..I'm honored...but hey, pls don't underestimate yourself, sis!!! coz your review is written with the same power and emotions( or even better!) , as all the others I read here ( and I bet it's longer than mine  ) Though, I think it's not right to compare the reviews coz each has its unique style and each shows the emotions and thoughts its author had at the show etc :)
Still your review is what I wanted to read - the other seeing what was happening in Munich, other thoughts, and other details :) - so I enjoyed it :)
and..yeah..sorry for not showing up at MJ shop in the morning as we scheduled in HRC  ...but yeah I decided to spend the morning doing shopping with my husband, coz otherwise he would kill me for sure ( yeah that was a difficult point to deal and to find a compromise with my husband :? - thanks God the found "the common language" with Viktor, thus all my probs were solved  )
Also, thanks a lot for the description of what was happening at MJ, coz u know, I was there only for several minutes:(
and I'm happy that your mission of delivery Cristy's gift to MJ also accomplished successfully :) Great! :)
So, I was really happy to meet you again, and to stay ( thanks to you  ) next to you in the 1st row, singing and rocking that night together! :) Your hearts and balloons rocked!!! I lovvved that idea! And ha! when I saw that purple flag on the stage in Klaus' hands, i finally understood what ( whom, to be correct)we were signing it for the night before in HRC :) :) and I was feeling kinda wow! and at the same time I tried to remember what I wrote there  but I couldn't - I think it was a standard phrase, but it doesnt matter! :)

Anyway, you really rock, Joanne! You're a machine of cool rocking ideas!!!!! I'm really pleased to meet you and to spend these unforgettable days with you! :) :) So the best is yet to come, isn't it ?( april, probably June..oops.. shhhh!!! I'm silent as a grave   )
Best wishes, Nadya

It's great to be here, to see you all!

Oh Nadia - April in St. Petersburg - sounds like a tradition I could get used to! Of course now I started thinking of all the problems of getting a visa I had last year haha funny how much I forgot. I guess I should start the process soon eh? :)

Oh Curry you know it's your fault that I wrote this long - very long review. So if I get any complaints it's all your fault! But yeah about the plec that James tried to give to me - I just go into survival mode now after getting hurt. My heart wants to leap out and grab for these things, but my arms want to protect the very same heart. But yes, I think he did try to throw it to me and it was the thought that really counts. :)

And Gabi I consider myself lucky to of been there with you, to experience the concert so close to someone who can feel and hear the music in a different way. Your energy is amazing!

I must apologize for such long blocks of text, I'm sure many won't read it. The expression on the internet is "TLDR" which is "Too Long Didn't Read" :)

That's another beautiful interesting review.. You're really good describing the situations that at some point, I almost felt as tired as you were there!! A review that made me feel ur high and lows at that moment.. It kept me asking myself questions and getting enthusiastic to know the end of the story: " will they manage to get the gift? Oh this means they didnt make it on time? But no i remember J was also upfront at the T, how did she make it?" :D

J, thanks for a summary full of suspense and passion and congrats for all the rocking endless ideas...
I really hope we do cross each other someday on the road..

Joanne,

Thank you for your special comment towards me.
I am always surprised, but touched when people around me realise the way I feel, my intentions, and the real me, as I am.
The Scorpsshows are great occassions for it, because I don't have to play any role, I can be myself, as I am.
I am touched to know that the band also understand, and percept my special way to enjoy the shows.
I feel more than lucky to have this kind of unique fan--rockband relationship.
It is really a big gift of life. :D

Haha yeah that's the song, I think it was the last they played. Kept on saying over and over at the end.

Just picture a gang of us at the front all shouting "FISH STICKS" it was pretty funny. :)

My dear friend, I loved your review. I felt as tho I were there!! BUT, if I had the choice, I wouldn't have had you miss the performance that is like none other, a performance by the Master of the Mastercaster, in his store. The gift could have waited til another time, and maybe could have not even been given to him. hmmmm right now I am thinking and seeing the gift bag at the bottom of a landfill!!!
Seriously tho, I care more about the fans and how they are treated. And I sure wish all of you had just stayed at the store. But with that said, I am very very grateful for the crazy wild decision to go get the gift cuz you all cared so much. I have my faults but damn I am blessed by good friends.
I loved the balloon story and Gabi, how wonderful to get a kissed Klaus plec!!! And J~ I am glad you all got by the "T" after all. Wish you had caught the plec tho.

Wonderful review, wonderful times, and who knows, maybe a fan meet can be done here on a much smaller scale. Who knows, yeah?

haha thank you for sharing Sarah, this also made my day...I think this is the same song where,in Oberhausen, the singer brought the mic to Adry in order to sing himself, and all that Adry had to say was: "WAS?" (what?)

Been wonderin where the THANK YOU is from the band for such an honor given them with the fan meeting and so many countries represented at the show and the swag bags the band got and just the simple fact that so many went out of their way to be there in Munich? The hard work the money OMG the money spent by so many who don't have much in the first place...... The meeting, the store, the show....where is the gratitude boys? tsk tsk for shame..... :(

I know that we all excuse these guys and that what all of you fans did, was out of love......well out of love for their fans, I so hope that they come back from their holidays and thank all of you for the honors. Also, I wonder why all the boys thank the fans for their bday videos except for one...??? SMH For shame... :naughty:
